Reasons in favour of the storage solution

  • Stabilisation of the energy market
The active participation of the storage facility in the markets for primary control power, secondary control power and the short-term markets (day-ahead auction and intraday trading) enables fluctuations in the production of renewable energies to be balanced out.

  • Stabilisation of the electricity grids
By participating in primary control power and secondary control power, large-scale battery storage systems help to keep the frequency in the electricity grid stable and thus secure the supply. By providing reactive power, the storage systems can also help to stabilise the grid voltage. Furthermore, the storage systems are ‘black start capable’ in order to actively help restore the grid in the event of a (partial) grid collapse. Overall, the storage systems therefore play a central role in supporting the critical infrastructure.

  • Curbing electricity prices
In the long term, the expansion of large-scale battery storage systems can help to reduce electricity exchange prices. By participating in the short-term markets, previously unutilised, cheap wind and solar power can be temporarily stored and fed back into the grid at a later date (fewer renewables and higher prices). This can force expensive fossil fuel producers out of the market at peak load times and thus reduce peak electricity prices.

  • Contribution to climate protection
Storage systems are an integral component of the energy transition in terms of the climate protection concept. By stabilising the grids and participating in the short-term markets, more renewable energy can be integrated into the electricity grid and thus actively contribute to reducing CO2 emissions from electricity generation.

  • Contribution to security of supply
The large-scale battery storage facility actively contributes to security of supply and thus increases the attractiveness of Förderstedt as a business location. By actively maintaining the voltage in the 110 kV grid, the site is of great importance for security of supply.

At the end of 2024, ECO STOR, together with energy transition associations and the Federal Council, successfully campaigned for a change in trade tax law. Until then, local authorities had not been taken into account when it came to paying trade tax on energy storage facilities. In the meantime, trade tax law has been amended for the 2025 tax year so that 90% of the trade tax levied on energy storage facilities is paid directly to the local communities. With this regulation, the municipalities at the plant location receive the same financial participation as has already been provided for wind and PV plants since 2021. As a result, in addition to the advantages for security of supply and climate protection, the municipalities now also benefit directly and significantly from the trade tax revenues of the storage facilities. Criteria

We at ECO STOR GmbH check a variety of criteria to find the best possible location for the large-scale battery storage system. The basis is the immediate proximity to a 110 kV grid connection. However, it is also particularly important to us that the site is far enough away from residential areas to minimise noise pollution and that it is compatible with species and nature conservation.

Location

The large-scale battery storage facility is being built in Förderstedt, a district of Staßfurt.

Address:
Makrene 8
39443 Staßfurt-Förderstedt

key data

  • more than 600,000 battery cells
  • up to 300 MW of power
  • over 700 MWh of storage capacity
  • charging and discharging twice daily

Environment

We need more wind power and photovoltaics in Germany for more climate protection and the energy transition. However, as they only feed electricity into the grid when there is enough wind or sun, they also pose a challenge for the German electricity system. This can be remedied by battery storage systems, which help to integrate more renewable energies into the German electricity system in a stable manner and thus accelerate the energy transition.

We at ECO STOR also want to make a concrete contribution to protecting the environment during the construction of the battery storage systems. When fencing the facility, for example, we ensure that there is a sufficiently large gap to the ground to allow wild animals to pass through. In addition, we create a habitat for numerous animals by completely planting the site boundaries with native shrubs and trees.
